WHAT are Input Output Modules?

Input Output Modules

These modules allow for the input of bearing temperatures, winding temperatures, fuel level, digital inputs, and remote start/stop on generators and providing analog signals to other control equipment.

All Monico gateways are compatible with our line of optional Input/Output (I/O) Modules. These modules allow the user to input bearing temperatures, winding temperatures, fuel level and digital inputs from ancillary equipment. The analog digital outputs allow for remote start/stop on generators and provide analog signals to other control equipment.

The addition of these modules to our Gateways adds even more flexibility and ability to our products.

Available I/O Modules:

  • (8) Digital Inputs & (6) Digital Outputs
  • (8) Thermocouple Inputs-Any type
  • (6) RTD Inputs-100 ohm Platinum
  • (8) Analog Voltage Inputs – 0-10V
  • (8) Analog Current Inputs – 0-20 mA
  • (4) Analog Outputs – Voltage or Current

I/O Module Use: Industrial Engine Start/Stop

The ability for remote start and stop of engines and gensets is a huge asset to users. It allows for equipment to be used more efficiently, the reduction of engine wear, fuel savings and the extension of engine hours.

I/O Module Use: Industrial Temperature Monitoring

Our Thermocouple and RTD I/O Modules can monitor temperatures such as exhaust, engine oil, engine coolant, and bearing temperatures to name just a few.

I/O Module Use: Industrial Pressure Monitoring

Our 0-20mA and 0-10VDC I/O Modules connect to a variety of devices such and can track engine oil, engine coolant, and fuel pressures or any other parameter provided via 0-20mA or 0-10VDC devices.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Monico I/O Modules used for?

Monico I/O Modules expand the capabilities of your Gateway or monitoring system by allowing you to input and output real-world signals — including temperature, pressure, fuel level, digital status, and control commands like remote start/stop.

How many inputs or outputs are available per module?

  • Each module is specialized for its signal type. For example:
  • 4 Analog Outputs (voltage or current selectable)
  • 8 Digital Inputs + 6 Digital Outputs
  • 8 Thermocouple Inputs (any type)
  • 6 RTD Inputs (100Ω Platinum)
  • 8 Analog Voltage Inputs
  • 8 Analog Current Inputs

Are the modules suitable for harsh industrial environments?

Yes. Monico I/O modules are designed for rugged industrial use and support Class I, Div II approved systems when paired with Monico Gateways.

Are these modules plug-and-play or do they require programming?

Most modules are plug-and-play with minimal setup, especially when paired with a pre-configured Gateway. Any required adjustments (like scaling or address mapping) can be easily made using MonicoView II™.

What types of signals can I connect with these modules?

Supported signal types include:

  • Analog Outputs (Voltage or Current)
  • Digital Inputs & Outputs
  • Thermocouple and RTD Temperature Sensors
  • Analog Voltage (0–10V)
  • Analog Current (0–20mA)

Which Monico products are compatible with these I/O Modules?

All Monico Gateway products, including CDL, CPC, J1939, and EMCP Gateways — as well as MonicoLive™ and mCore® SDR platforms — are compatible with our I/O modules.

How are the I/O modules connected and configured?

Modules are plug-in accessories that connect to Monico systems via supported expansion ports. Configuration is handled through Monico’s free MonicoView II™ software or via the built-in USB interface on the gateway.

Can I use multiple I/O modules in a single system?

Yes. You can connect multiple I/O modules to gather different types of data from various sources, depending on the available expansion capacity and system design.
