Integrated Monitoring for MTU Engines and Propulsion Systems

Monico Monitoring delivers advanced, protocol-aware solutions for MTU® engine monitoring—offering full visibility into faults, operating parameters, and control system data across marine, power generation, and industrial applications.

Whether your engines use ADEC, DDEC, or MDEC controllers—or require proprietary protocol support via a SAM module—Monico’s Gateways provide a unified, reliable platform for gathering and broadcasting real-time data. Designed to work with MTU’s Engine Interface Module (EIM), our solutions simplify communication over J1939 and CANbus, enabling smooth integration with automation and ship control systems.

  • Full support for ADEC, DDEC, and MDEC controllers
  • Native communication over J1939 / CANbus
  • Reads up to 290+ faults and status signals from the MTU EIM 290
  • Broadcasts over multiple Ethernet protocols (Modbus TCP, Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, GE SRTP)
  • Supports RS232/RS485 output via Modbus RTU
  • All-in-one, pre-configured system—no need for multiple protocol converters

Monitoring the MTU EIM 290

At the heart of most MTU monitoring systems is the Engine Interface Module (EIM 290), which acts as a bridge between the engine’s control logic and the ship or automation system. Mounted directly on the engine, the EIM collects fault codes, system statuses, and performance metrics—transmitting them via CANbus to the local control network.

Monico’s Gateways tap into this data stream, extracting detailed information from the EIM and broadcasting it over industrial protocols in a format your control system understands—making integration simple, clean, and scalable.

Broadcasting Across Multiple Industrial Protocols

Monico Gateways excel at multi-protocol support. Once data is collected from the MTU engine or EIM, it can be broadcast simultaneously across:

  • Modbus TCP
  • Siemens S7
  • Allen-Bradley ControlLogix (EtherNet/IP)
  • GE SRTP
  • Modbus RTU via RS232 or RS485

Applications for MTU Monitoring

  • Engine Test Stands and Performance Tracking
  • Commercial and Luxury Marine Vessels
  • Power Generation & Hybrid Power Systems
  • Offshore Platforms & Marine Propulsion
  • Repowered Industrial Equipment

This versatility allows Monico to act as a single-source monitoring solution—converting complex, proprietary engine data into real-time operational insight across the vessel or facility.

Without Monico, most MTU monitoring implementations require multiple protocol converters and custom logic to connect EIMs to automation systems. With Monico, that’s all handled in one DIN-rail-mountable device—pre-configured, tested, and ready for install by any qualified technician.

Combined with MonicoView II™ software, users can access system configuration, monitor live data, and modify protocol mappings as needed—without writing custom code.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What MTU controllers are supported by Monico?

We support ADEC, DDEC, and MDEC MTU controllers, as well as engines requiring proprietary SAM module support. We also integrate with MTU’s EIM 290 for fault/status monitoring.

What industrial protocols can the Gateway output?

Data can be broadcast over Modbus TCP, Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, GE SRTP, and Modbus RTU. Multiple protocols can run concurrently.

Is this system pre-configured or do I need to program it?

All systems are pre-configured for your MTU engine and controller. You can customize settings using our included MonicoView II™ software, with no programming knowledge required.

How does Monico communicate with the MTU EIM?

Our Gateway connects over CANbus using J1939, allowing us to collect engine faults, system statuses, and performance data directly from the EIM module.

Can I use one Gateway to monitor everything?

Yes. Monico Gateways consolidate all required monitoring functions into a single device—replacing the need for multiple protocol converters and reducing system complexity.
