EMCP3/4 Gateway PLUS for Generator Remote Monitoring System

Because of the wide range of uses of the equipment, many of these generators are in remote locations. The EMCP3/4 Gateway PLUS provides the ability to remotely monitor and control these generators from any location. The email server is programmable to send email and SMS alerts to notify personnel of warnings and shutdowns. In addition, data from other devices within your diesel remote monitoring system can be converted and recorded on the same data map or made accessible through many other protocols through available ports.

As stated above, the PLUS version of this Gateway takes basic version’s abilities much farther. The real-time data logging feature has proven extremely valuable for troubleshooting tough problems that require continuous real-time data from the engine and connected equipment. The Gateway will accept up to a 2 GB Flash card that can store log files for 80 parameters every three seconds over approximately 200 days. These log files are stored in CSV formats for easy import into Microsoft Excel. The trend and historical data provided by this feature are extremely important for high value industrial equipment to provide high-fidelity troubleshooting history for accurate diagnostics. Even if you have a high bandwidth SCADA system, the on-board industrial data logger can serve as a critical backup in case of communications link failure.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EMCP 3/4 Gateway™ used for?

The EMCP 3/4 Gateway™ is a pre-configured communication device designed specifically for Caterpillar® diesel generator sets using EMCP 3.x and EMCP 4.x control panels. It enables efficient extraction of real-time data for remote monitoring and diagnostics.

What kind of data does it provide?

The Gateway captures key operational parameters such as engine speed, oil pressure, voltage, frequency, and current. It also supports active (DM1) and inactive (DM2) fault codes, giving maintenance personnel the insights they need to proactively service equipment.

Is the EMCP 3/4 Gateway™ easy to install?

Yes. It’s DIN-rail mountable, requires 24 VDC power, and supports plug-and-play setup for most technicians. The built-in USB interface provides a clear, visual configuration tool for setup and troubleshooting.

Which communication protocols are supported?

The Gateway supports over 100 industrial protocols and can be configured to act as a Modbus RTU/TCP slave, a BACnet device, or to push data to Allen Bradley, GE Fanuc, or Siemens PLCs. It includes RS-232, RS-485, and Ethernet ports for flexibility.

Can this integrate with my existing monitoring system?

Yes. The Gateway outputs clean, structured data and supports most major industrial protocols, making it easy to integrate with your SCADA, PLC, or remote monitoring system.

What makes this gateway different from others?

Unlike general-purpose converters, the EMCP 3/4 Gateway™ is built specifically for CAT® gensets that use an S.A.E. J1939 link (instead of the CDL protocol). It gathers engine and electrical data, as well as DM1 and DM2 diagnostic codes, and maps that data into contiguous registers for easy integration with monitoring systems.

How many data points are pre-configured?

Each unit comes with 148 pre-mapped standard parameters and 180 system flags, ensuring robust monitoring coverage with minimal setup. Additional customization is possible using Monico’s free MonicoView II™ software.

Can it be used in hazardous environments?

Yes. The EMCP 3/4 Gateway™ is C-UL approved for Class I, Division II, Groups A-D hazardous locations — making it suitable for tough industrial and remote applications.

Is there a modern alternative to the EMCP 3/4 Gateway™?

Yes. While the EMCP 3/4 Gateway™ is an excellent solution for current CAT® gensets, Monico’s mCore® SDR offers enhanced capabilities like onboard analytics, cloud integration, and native support for edge processing — providing a future-ready path for generator monitoring and beyond.

How fast does the Gateway collect data?

It polls approximately 20–60 parameters per second, offering fast, responsive updates suitable for real-time monitoring and integration.
